If you have a modest to large portfolio of domains, it may be a challenge figuring out which domains to develop first and which ones later on. Here are some basic principles to help you with the decision:

1) If you have your domains parked and have access to traffic info that includes type in and search engine referral data, develop the domains first those that receive most traffic. You want your developed domains to immediately start generating revenue so as to fund future projects and hopefully also make you extra money. If a domain receives search engine traffic, take note of the keywords that the traffic came through. Use those keywords in the SEO of your developed site. If a domain gets very minimal traffic at the parking service that is inconsistent, move to point #2.

2) Research the keywords that appear in your domain. Read our post on how to research keywords on this very blog. You want keywords that are used in a lot of searches. Also look for keywords that have highest pay.

3) Take into consideration the perception of your domain. Dot com domains carry the most weight as they are most recognizable. Dot net, dot org and many country code extensions are also respectable. Other extensions may work as well but depend on the quality of the name. Keywords of your domain should make sense, appearing in a readable order. Awkward looking or sounding domains, and especially those in lesser recognizable extensions, loose impact as visitors tend to trust them less because they associate these with spam sites.

4) Develop domains that you want to hang on to the longest. True return from development comes in over time. Plus it takes time to build good search engine presence. As such, domains you don’t want to keep renewing or want to move quickly are not good choices for development.

5) Look for niches. If you develop a number of domains in a certain niche, you can use the collective traffic of your sites as an attractive offer when selling advertising directly to businesses. Best revenue comes from direct advertising sales. Once you establish a strong presence on the search engines you will also see offers from businesses and ad agencies wanting to advertise on your sites.

By following these guidelines you will be in a better position to decide which domains to develop first. Read our post on developing domains and search engine marketing on this blog.

Recent sales attest to the fact you can still purchase a domain name for X,XXX or less and turn over a sale at XX,XXX or more (way more in some cases.)

At the same time, if you browse the domain forums you will note that many quality keyword domains are still registered at registration prices and either developed or waiting for the right sale.

The fact is that there is a wealth of domains available for registration. The only thing missing on the part of the domainer is the education in the niche markets. In our case, we come across domains available (mostly dropped) all the time as we work for different clients and industries and learn about their specific needs, competitors, and audience. Most of these domains that we end up registering are in the dot com extension, some in dot net, and some in dot ca, very very few in other extensions.

Where to get domain name ideas?

A lot of domain names come to us through email drop list services. Some names are not specifically listed but a related domain to one on the list may be available. It helps to test the keywords. These lists are a good source of domain name ideas.

Other domains come through keyword research. As we research keywords for SEO on websites we’re developing, some keyword combinations are available for registration.

Another important aspect in choosing domains that are unregistered or dropped: VISION. Most, if not all, domainers that became rich or make comfortable living through domain sales and development need a healthy dose of vision. You need to be able to look at a domain name and see its potential in 2 to 10 years. Vision is probably one of the hardest qualities to acquire when selecting domain names. One key to this quality is becoming familiarized with the subject of the name.

Word of caution

Don’t go registering every domain name just because it is available. Choosing available domains is an art and gets more difficult as less and less good domains stay available or get dropped by previous owners. Experience is indispensable in this case. Every year we allow a good handful of domains to drop because they were not the good investment once thought at the time of the registration. But this loss is not really a loss if you hone your domain selection skills as a result.

When you develop any domain into a website, you want to fully benefit from search engine placement. To this end, your selection of keywords that potential visitors are actually typing into the search engines to find services related to the topic of your website is incredibly important.

The Domain2Site website publishing platform allows you to publish domains into websites that produce results especially when you select relevant keywords.

To this end, it is important to do some research before you enter keywords into your Domainer Script domain listings. This research does not need to be extensive or time consuming. Google has launched a new beta keyword tool that will help you determine what keywords related to your domain will bring higher traffic. Check it out at https://adwords.google.com/o/Targeting/Explorer.

The report of this week’s top domain sales by DN Journal listed a runner up to the top sale at six figures via an auction powered by Domainer Script. We certainly do not want to take credit for the domain name garnering such a price. All credit goes to the team behind the auction marketing and the strength of the name itself. However, it is certainly a privilege, a feather in your hat, so to speak, to lend a hand in this domain auction.

Unless you have the killer type-in domain and are sitting pretty with daily quality type in traffic to the parked page, your domains are not reaching their full potential. The domain system was never designed for strict type-in navigation. The type-in phenomena kind of sneaked in unannounced and pleasantly surprised some early domain investors, which led to the rapid growth in parking companies started by the very domain investors.

The truth is that the vast majority of domains don’t make real money in parking. Even PPC revenue plummeted, perhaps due to when potential customers enter sites via parked pages, the conversion rate is not as high as when they enter via a website on the same topic. So while both parking PPC and site content PPC went down, site PPC stays well above parking. So domain owners turned to content sites made for PPC revenue. Now although they may enjoy better per click performance, unless the content is original then the sites still rely pretty much on type in traffic.

To maximize domain profit it is essential to maximize the domain potential. The domain system was designed for easy navigation of Web pages. Stands to reason then, and everyone agrees, that developing a domain into a website will increase value of and revenue from that domain. However, if you own 1000′s of names, the time and money needed to develop these is quite significant. Then just developing is not enough. To truly maximize your domain profits, it is important to employ SEM. What is SEM? SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing which includes different methods of increasing a website’s presence on the search engine results pages.

The domain publishing platform for the Domainer Script application is Domain2Site. This system offers the essential tools to quickly publish domains with fresh SEO-friendly content (plus other features) at very low start-up cost (around 0.70 cents per month.) This allows domain publishers to direct more of their resources to SEM.

Search Engine Submission

One of the first steps is to submit your sites to the search engines. A simple search for submit to search engines or add url will yield many results. Here are the big search engine submit pages:

Google: http://www.google.com/addurl/

Yahoo: http://search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html

Bing: http://www.bing.com/webmaster/SubmitSitePage.aspx

If your website does not appear in any of the search engines above, simply adding your url via the links above, can take quite some time (perhaps a month to a few months) before the search engines index your site.

To speed up the process is to get indexed via other sites that are already in the index. For this, directories are very valuable. The highest quality directories will bring fastest results, but they are most expensive. Here are a few examples:

Best of the Web – http://www.botw.org

Yahoo Directory – http://dir.yahoo.com

Another very good one is www.dmoz.org, it is free but difficult to get listed and may take a long time.

It is not recommended to submit to the above directories except your very best sites. If your site does not have sufficient quality content it may be rejected and your effort is lost.

For the majority of sites, you will want to use quality free directories and low cost directory submission services.

Going to any of the top domainer or web forums and searching for directory submission will yield many results. Some of these forums are forum.digitalpoint.com, dnforum.com, namepros.com, v7n.com. Be judicious in the service you use and refer to the posts from other users of the service.

Of course, the best and most cost effective way of getting links is doing a search for free web directory and doing it yourself. This is the most time consuming but you will have best quality control over the process.

Finally, you can also do article marketing by submitting articles to well known and ranked article services such as ezinearticles.com, articlesbase.com, and others. Learn more about article marketing on Google.

Remember, Domain2Site is the world’s most unique mass website publishing platform that will leave sufficient resources to build quality content and Search Engine Marketing, the key to maximizing real domain profits.

TCK Media, the company behind Domainer Script, is proud to announce the launch of Domain2Site 1.0, an add-on service to Domainer Script that allows domainers to mass develop their domains with only a few clicks. Professional templates provide a quick and smart looking base for published sites. Users are able to easily customize their websites with custom headers, logos, and pages. For the more HTML and CSS savvy, full editing functionality is available so users can edit the HTML code and style sheets for complete customization. Website edits can be made across all websites published with a particular template, these are groups of sites, as well as pages can be added for all sites across the network, which is useful for pages such as privacy statements, advertising info, etc. Templates can be copied and modified for particular niches, advertiser or affiliate code can be easily integrated, with Adsense as the default ppc integration. Advertisers can be edited on entire network or only niche groups. SEO is interleaved into the CMS functionality and all pages and content generated is automatically search engine optimized.

Domain2Site offers domainers huge benefits. For starters, a network of your best properties developed with search engine presence attracts direct advertiser interest. Developed domains with search engine presence also increase value of the domain to end users. Domains that are developed generate much higher income through ppc programs such as Google’s Adsense as well as affiliate marketing. You can select any of your domains for large scale development without the need to change hosting.

Templates available at launch: Auto, Corporate, Residential, Technology, Transportation, Travel, Women

Technology Template

Corporate Template

Note that this is not parking. The domains are published with lightly populated but ready-to-browse SEO’d websites based on domain name entry in Domainer Script’s back-end admin office. To reach full potential of Domain2Site, users should take advantage of the CMS tools to add and create relevant original content.

We are happy to re-launch the new DomainerScript.com which aims to improve user experience and client support services. As our user-base grows so does the need to keep everyone updated at the same time. For this reason we launch the new support forum at www.domainerscript.com/forum. If you haven’t done so already, you are encouraged to join. If you are user of DS then, after signing up to the forum, send us your forum user and domain where your DS-powered site is running. We will upgrade your forum account so you can access the download and support forum areas.

Domain Development

With the launch of the re-designed site, we also are introducing a new hosted service called Domain2Site. This new tool allows domainers to publish domains into full websites. Domainers without any knowledge of HTML can easily add and manage content as well as advertisers across their entire network or groups of sites.

Stay tuned for more developments.
